Public Enemy has been a powerhouse source of lyrics filled with biting realism and naked reality about the state of African Americans in the United States. For the group, their music has been a conductive medium, through which they enlighten black youth (and the world) to the importance of social consciousness and taking a stand on issues that ultimately affect their lives within the wider community. Their controversial and politically charged works harshly criticize government and the alleged underhanded dealings of its agencies. They brought to the fore subverted means of economic, social, cultural, and political oppression; a message that rang true to a world wide audience, especially in Europe and Asia. These musical and cultural icons were pioneers of the fusion of genres of music (the crossover movement), when they blended their militant lyrics to the cacophonous sounds of heavy metal. Today, the group continues to make socially conscious music and Chuck D, the group’s leader, challenges inhabitants of the ‘ivory tower’ and ‘hallowed halls of academia’ to learn the under documented truths about society, in order to act as agents for social change.
