On May 15-17, 2006, more than 120 delegates witnessed and participated in the activities of “Getting it Right for Adolescent Learners”. The Symposium hosted by CEA took place in Vancouver at Simon Fraser University, Harbour Centre.

Student disengagement in high school is not a new phenomenon. In Canada , drop out rates are sometimes as high as 30%. At a time when education is considered crucial to prepare young people for their role in an increasingly complex and integrated world is it time to transform
the structures of high school in order to better meet the needs of adolescent learners?

Through "Getting it Right for Adolescent Learners" CEA aspired to

  • SPARK a national dialogue on adolescent learning in the 21st century;
  • IDENTIFY and encourage new approaches to high school;
  • SHIFT deficit-based perspective on adolescence towards valuing adolescence as a time for creativity and experimentation;
  • HARNESS collective energy and wisdom of participants across different sectors;
  • INVITE bold, inspired conjecture and innovative thinking;
  • CREATE a cross-sectoral community;
  • INSPIRE the public imagination.
